The invention is a product of natural origin – derived from rosehip – obtained with a green extraction technique, without the use of organic solvents. The product has been shown to have high antimicrobial activity towards bacterial strains of different types, including some resistant or multi-resistant to antibiotics.

Market

The World Health Organization (WHO) published in 2017 an alarm about the presence, in the health field, of super-bacteria now refractory to current treatments, among them, some nosocomial pathogens are mentioned, in particular: Pseudomonas aeruginosa and several species belonging to the family of Enterobacteriaceae.
There is therefore a need for the development of new antimicrobials.
Antibiotic resistance is currently a global problem that affects virtually the entire world population.

Problem

Antibiotic resistance is currently a global problem. In addition to the causes related to the abuse and incorrect methods of intake/administration and the appearance of multidrug resistant MDR strains, there has also been a decrease in investment by pharmaceutical industries in the study of new active molecules in recent years. There is therefore a need for the development of new antimicrobials.
A similar problem is detected in the use of disinfectants, in which the use of synthetic substances, often highly toxic, also raises the problem of environmental contamination. The alarm about antimicrobial devices involves, at the same time, apparently different but cohesive fields in the same problem; for example, in the veterinary and agricultural sector where some newly spread bacterial infections are putting entire production chains on their knees; we mention Xylella fastidiosa in the olive growing sector and infections in sheep that cause mastitis from P. aeruginosa.

Current Technology Limitations

Although natural remedies against microbes and infections have been in use for thousands of years, the use of plant extracts, in whole or parts of them, has never involved the development of antimicrobials. The reasons are different and often can be traced back to the difficulty of using a single species, the variability of the extract and consequently the biological activity of the vegetable preparation obtained from it and – not insignificant aspect – to the entire processing system that leads to the obtaining of the final product.
Currently, various techniques of extraction of active compounds are used, starting from the plant product, which play a critical role in determining the results of biological assays. In fact, the literature contains a wide range of extractive technologies that generate extracts with different chemical composition, yield, environmental impact, costs, feasibility of scale ups up to the development of an industrial process.

Killer Application

  • The invention is a solution with high antimicrobial activity, obtained from rosehip;
  • The preparation method is eco-friendly; the product and process waste are free from contaminants;
  • Can be used as an antimicrobial functional base in preparations for human, animal and plant use, in those areas where it is necessary to adopt antimicrobial prophylaxis:
    in personal and domestic hygiene products;
  • Can be used in hospital wards, against the transmission of nosocomial cross-infections;
  • Can be used for disinfection of environments or equipment used in the food packaging industry;
  • In the agricultural field for the treatment of certain diseases of plants in cultivation or in ornamental plants;
    in the veterinary field for the treatment of skin mycoses and the eradication of pathogenic bacteria and in the disinfection of milking plants.

Our Technology and Solutions

Rosehip extract can be used as an antimicrobial functional base:
• In preparations for human use (creams for skin use, antibacterial gel for oral dental use in the treatment of perimplantitis and periodontitis, functional base for mouthwash and toothpastes, antifungal creams or gels for topical use;
• As a disinfectant (in household hygiene products, for skin use, in soaps etc., in preoperative disinfection, in hospital wards, against the transmission of cross infections of a nosocomial nature, for community hygiene products, in private medical practices, in the disinfection of surgical instruments, in the line systems of fluids, in aeration/conditioning systems, in environmental disinfection systems through automatic devices)
• In the veterinary field (in liquid or solid preparations for skin disinfection in farmed or pet animals, in the treatment of skin mycoses, in the treatment of parasites, in the disinfection of milking plants);
• In the agricultural field (in the treatment of diseases of plants in cultivation or in ornamental plants, in the disinfection of environments or equipment used in the packaging industry).

Advantages

  • The invention based on rosehip is:
  • A broad-spectrum antimicrobial product:active towards antibiotic-resistant bacteria;
    100 % natural;
  • Free of traces of solvent;
  • Can be diluted in water at different concentrations;
    can be used in liquid, semi-solid and solid formulations: creams, lotions, gels, sprays, suspensions, milks and soaps.

Roadmap

  • This invention, although still in the process of applying for patents, has already aroused interest in an agricultural entrepreneur who has indicated that he wants to acquire it.
    Since this is a recently filed international patent application (PCT/IB2020/062317 of 22/12/2020) no more detailed information can be released, but it is certain that a future enhancement could concern the development of a pilot plant for mass production of this invention.
    The whole process is scalable to obtain a greater production of rosehip extract.
